April Fools Day story update

March 31, 2009 - Chuck Hunt
Once again the Faribault County Register ran an April Fools Day story. It has become such a tradition that it is hard to stop. I never was involved in this type of 'activity' at any newspaper I have been associated with in the past. Oh, I was involved in plenty of shenanigans and pranks all of my life. I just didn't use the newspaper as a vehicle to deliver the joke. I still am a bit uncomfortable with it. It has to do with credibility, I suppose. We try hard to have factual stories in our newspaper each week, and then once a year we put in a total lie. Well, this year, maybe not such a total fabrication. There was enough truth in the story to lend it some credibility. The story, of course, is about turning the old water tower into a big pea. In case you didn't notice the end of the story, it is an April Fool story. Or is it? Shelly Griemann at the Blue Earth Chamber actually does have plans in the works for a giant pea, to go with the giant Green Giant. And yes, she would like it to drop at midnight on New Year's Eve. It is not true, however, that the old water tower will become a giant pea. It is true that Duane Liebl of Blue Earth owns a metal fabrication shop in Lake Crystal. It is not true he has been contacted about building the pea or the lift mechanism. But it is true he built one to lift a giant apple out of the new Mets Stadium in New York. A little truth, a little lie. Then there always is the possibilty that the powers that be may read that story and think. "Hmm, maybe this could work." Eventually our little April Fools Day story could become true. Then we would have to run another story about the project...but would anyone believe it? Fool me once, shame on me; fool me twice...shame on you.
