Giant crowds at Giant Days

July 13, 2009 - Chuck Hunt
It had to be the weather, right? For sure, it was absolutely ideal weather conditions for Giant Days in Blue Earth this past weekend. Warm, but not hot and humid. A nice light breeze to keep everyone pretty comfortable. It translated into huge crowds at nearly every event. Even Friday night at the Green Giant statue's 30th birthday party, the people came - and stayed. The clouds spit out a drop or two, but the rain stayed away. It was a fun evening of music, games and just hanging out. Several folks commented it reminded them of the 'Good Old Days' when people came to town to visit with their neighbors. On Saturday there were lots of runners, a huge turnout of classic vehicles at the car show, and more people wandering around downtown than normal. The parade had a large number of people lining both sides of the route, enjoying the entries and the candy on a beautiful evening. There even was a real live Green Giant riding in the parade, greeting the kids and adults with a hearty 'Ho, Ho, Ho.' (I am still trying to track down who that masked man was!) The dance Saturday night was packed at it's new location in the parking lot of Double Play. On Sunday, the one event - Demolition Derby - had a good crowd and a fine turnout of cars and drivers willing - and eager - to crash into each other. It did not disappoint the crowd as there were plenty of 'great hits.' The weather stayed pleasant all weekend, and from everyone we visited with, "A good time was had by all."
