| Walking miles for a causeAugust 17, 2009 - Chuck HuntThe Faribault County Relay for Life event was held Friday night, and once again it was blessed with some great weather. Although the wind blew over some of the luminary bags earlier in the day, the actual event, starting around 7 p.m., enjoyed a beautiful evening of perfect weather. The report was that this year's event raised $64,900, and that is without all of the totals tabulated from all the fundraising. I have attended numerous Relay for Lifes in several different counties, but they all operate more or less the same. Teams of walkers raise money and then walk all night as part of that fundraising effort. Some even roller blade or run. What has always surprised me is that they all seem to be having a lot of fun doing it. Sure, there is a serious side, with the memories of loved ones who passed away after long battles against cancer, but there is also the joy of celebrating with those who have survived the disease, some staying cancer free for decades. Then, there is the satisfaction knowing that you are doing something to raise money to help find cures for these nasty afflictions. Having had several close family members die much too young from one form of cancer or another, it is a topic that always remains close to my thoughts. I am not alone. Nearly everyone you meet will have a story of a relative - or themselves - who has had a form of cancer. I'm glad the Relay for Life volunteers are so dedicated to keep this project going and doing it so well. Our kudos to all those involved for a job well done. ![]() ![]() ![]() Article CommentsNo comments posted for this article. ![]() ![]() ![]() Post a Comment![]() ![]() ![]() | in: News, Blogs & Events Web ![]() ![]() ![]() |
