Football blues

November 1, 2010 - Chuck Hunt
Last weekend was not a good one if you are a football fan in the Blue Earth area. First, the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers are in a world of hurt. They have been having such a bad season that their head coach has already been canned, and the season wasn't even over yet. Saturday was another in a string of big losses this year. They are hard to watch. And, I used to go to quite a few Gopher football games, and saw them lose some tough games. This season, though, isn't just some a couple of rough games, it is the whole season. Yes, they sure need a new coach. But, I wonder who, of any big time coaching ability and quality, will the Gophers be able to entice to come here. Only time will tell. Then that evening, last Saturday, the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers lost to Minneapolis Washburn. The Millers were seeded No. 2 in the Section, the Bucs No. 3. The Bucs got behind early, and couldn't come back. Despite the loss, they have nothing to hang their heads about. There were some fans who wondered what kind of a season they would have this year, after having lost some pretty good athletes to graduation. The answer is, they had a really good season, going 6-4, and proving they had a good running game and passing attack. I think they over-excelled. The Vikings on Sunday are a different story altogether. Is this the same team as last season? What happened? They are under-achieving. I can't say the blame can be all laid onto Bret Favre's sore ankle. He is doing the best a 41-year-old man can do. But some of these guys need to examine their work. The defense, the running attack, the secondary, etc. It is again a case of not being as good as you should be. They need to step it up, not give it up. Maybe it comes down to the coach again. The Gophers sure thought so. Maybe the Vikings need to look that way too.
