Vikings fire Childress

November 22, 2010 - Chuck Hunt
Amazing. Simply amazing. The Vikings losing to the Packers twice this season was almost too much to take. Being 3-7 is too much to take. And I guess it was for Vikings owner Zygi Wilf. How did the Vikings go from being the darlings of the NFL to the joke of the NFL - in less than one season? Last year, the networks were busy trying to rearrange the schedule in order to get the Vikings games on as much national TV as possible - for the added ratings. Bret Favre's No. 4 jersey was the hottest selling NFL item in the nation. The Vikings got ahead by 20 points in every game before the fans were all seated in the stadium. They were one heart wrenching play away from going to the Super Bowl. This year, well, a completely different story. Sunday was the last straw. When the Fox television crew lampooned the Vikings with a David Letterman Top Ten List of top ten Vikings excuses for having a lousy season, you just knew they were done. And, they are. Oh, they will still win a couple of games - probably. But the Bears and Packers are the the two teams that are going to battle it out. The shame comes in with the fact that they have a lot of talent. But, somehow they just can't do a darn thing this year. They have gone from heroes to goats, in less than a season. So has their head coach. Brad Childress was a genius last season, having put together a team with more talent than any other. A Hall of Fame quarterback, outstanding running back, best defensive line in the country, and able to score at will. But unable to finish it off, with a trip to the Big Game. This year, he can't seem to do anything right. And, the Randy Moss hiring, then firing, was a topper. It sure isn't easy being a Vikings fan. Never has been. But the true fans stick out, through good times and bad. Who would have figured the good times and the bad times would only be six months apart....
