Surprise visitor at Osborn open house
August 18, 2012 - Chuck Hunt
Congratulations to Ron and Charlotte Osborn of Winnebago who were this year’s newest inductees into the Winnebago Hall of Fame. It was fun to drive them in the Moto Fest parade and visit with them. The pair were the driving force in getting Moto Fest started. Charlotte kept saying that it was very strange to be in the parade, instead of being the one in charge of directing the parade. Neither of the Osborns thought they should be honored and have to ride in the parade as the grand marshalls. But once the parade started, they saw how much fun it was to see the people, throw candy to the kids, and copies of the Faribault County Register to the adults. Then last week they were honored at a special open house and received their plaque of honor. It was interesting to visit with Luis Gimenez who was a foreign exchange student from Paraguay who stayed with the Osborns in 1981-82. He was a surprise quest at the open house. I kidded him that he was going to get the award for having come the greatest distance to attend the celebration. The Osborn’s children set the whole thing up, arranging for Luis to make a surprise appearance. One of their kids said she had to go to Minneapolis that day to pick up a new bedroom set she had supposedly purchased. Charlotte says she thought that a bit odd, going to the cities in the morning of the day of the big open house party. She worried they would get back in time. They did get back, but not with a bedroom set, but with Luis instead. Luis says he and his family are big proponents of the exchange student programs. His wife, Doris, was an exchange student in Texas. His oldest son, Emilio, was an exchange student in Apple Valley, Minnesota. His daughter, Nathalie, was an exchange student in Arizona. And the youngest son, Mauricio, is leaving this month to be an exchange student in Finland for the year. Travel comes naturally to Luis, as he works as a travel agent. And yes, the Osborns have traveled to Paraguay to visit Luis and his family there. Ron says it was a great two week visit. Now he would like to take an old tractor that he owns and somehow ship it to Paraguay for Luis’s father, who is a farmer there and really could use it. Sounds like a great idea.
