EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A new center at Michigan State University aims to look for better ways to preserve roadways.

The school's Transportation Center on Highway Pavement Preservation will lead a national group whose mission is to develop strategies for extending pavement life. It's getting $1.4 million for its work during the first year and will be funded through 2017.

According to the school, the center will focus on three areas: Improved materials to extend the usable life of highways; coming up with ways to monitor roads for problems or damage; and looking at ways to best manage such roadways for long use.

Others involved include University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; University of Texas at Austin; University of Minnesota; North Carolina A&T State University; and University of Hawaii.
