Hanson and Aukes

High school golfers from Faribault County played well at the State Golf Tournaments held last week.

In the State Class A Tournament held at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, the United South Central girls team placed sixth in state with a two-day tally of 776.

They shot a 383 on the second round of the meet held last Thursday.

USC’s Ali Wood led the Rebels with a 177 score, which put her in a tie for 13th place. She shot an 86 on the second day of the meet.

Claire Christian tied for 37th place with a two day total of 191. Kyley Bullerman shot a 202 for 53rd place, Erinn Hotzler a 206 for a tie for 62nd place, Veronica Schindler a 226 for 81st and Jenna Stevermer was right behind with a 229 for 82nd place.

Lewiston-Altura won the Class A title with a score of 671.

In the boys Class A competition, Sam Gackstetter of USC shot an 80 on the second day for a two day tally of 154, placing him in 13th place in the state.

Blue Earth Area had two members of the boys team participating in the State Class AA Tournament held at the Ridges at Sand Creek course near Jordan.

Andy Aukes carded a spectacular 18-hole score of 74 (38-36) on Thursday, the second day of the meet. It gave him a two day tally of 154, placing him in a tie for 28th place.

Aukes had shot an 80 (41-39) on Wednesday, the first day of the State Tournament. That score had put him in a tie for 48th place after the first day.

The Bucs’ Connor Hanson shot an 88 (45-43) on the second day, placing him in a tie for 81st place with a 36 hole total of 175.

He had carded an 87 (47-40) on Wednesday. That score had him in a tie for 83rd after the first day.

“Andy was very solid all day,” Buc golf coach Al Cue says. “He was two over on the front and also played the back nine consistently for the most part. He was two under until the last hole and had a little ‘hiccup’ on the 18th and took a double bogey.”

Cue, the girls team coach, was at the Thursday round filling in for Buc boys coach Travis Armstrong who was unable to attend the second day.

“Connor had some up and down holes on the second day,” Cue says. “He had a couple of birdies but he also got in the rough a lot, and this rough was tough, so he paid the price.”

Cue says Hanson, a senior, had a great experience and accomplished a lot for his first – and last year of golf for BEA.

“Both of these young men represented Blue Earth Area in a very positive way,” Cue adds.
