Blue Earth Area’s varsity girls and boys cross country teams not only had tough competition to contend with at the Wolverine Invite held Aug. 31 at the Mountain Lake Golf Club.

Sunny, steamy conditions with temperatures in the mid-80s posed another challenge.

The girls took fourth place with 146 points, while the boys were sixth with 176.

Winning the girls title was Adrian with a total of 38 and Waseca won the boys competition with 40 points.

Medals were awarded to the top 15 finishers in all races.

Senior Courtney Grandgenett won the only medal the Buc girls with a 14th-place time of 16 minutes, 54 seconds.

Senior Marissia Hagedorn covered the 4,000-meter course in 17:18 to place 20th and teammate Taylor Grandgenett was seven spots back with a time of 17:44.

Taking 30th overall was Signe Olson with 17:50 and Shayna Stevermer was the last runner to be counted in the team scoring with a 55th-place time of 19:35.

Two Buc boys earned medals.

Freshman Mike Ankeny claimed 13th place in his 5,000-meter race in 19 minutes, 17 seconds, and senior Jake Wagner took 15th in 19 minutes, 25 seconds.

Finishing 27th was senior Jake Zebedee with a time of 20:13, while Ben Krussow was 57th with 21:45.

Isaac Vasquez was the final runner to figure in his team’s score with a 64th-place time of 22:13.

The Buc runners completed at the 30-plus teams Redbird Invitational held Thursday at the Montgomery golf course. Results of the meet will be in next week’s Register.
