Several area athletes took part in the Class A State Track Meet held June 8 and 9 at Hamline University in St. Paul.
For Blue Earth Area, five girls and four boys qualified for state at the Section 2A Championship on June 2 at Mankato West High School.
Also, one United South Central distance runner advanced with a record-breaking performance.
The top two finishers in individual events and relays moved on to the state meet. Also, medals were awarded to the top six finishers in each event.
Both the Buc girls and boys teams finished in second place in the competition and took home a trophy.
Also, the Section 2A coaches selected head coach Tom Plocker as the section's girls track coach of the year.
For the Bucs, junior Krista Hassing set a new school and section record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.84.
She also was part of the recording-setting 4 x 400-meter relay that posted a new section mark of 4:02.64.
Members of the squad include Taylor Grandgenett (60.7), Anne Franta (61.2), Karli Olsen (61.2) and Hassing (59.6).
Senior standout Marissia Hagedorn took home two gold medals and a silver.
Hagedorn took first in the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.29 seconds and first in the pole vault with a height of 10 feet, 2 inches.
She was second in the 300-meter low hurdles with a time of 46.51 seconds.
Winning the bronze medal in the 300-meter lows was Taylor Grandgenett in 47.55 seconds.
The Buc eighth-grader missed qualifying for state by just one second, falling short of the time standard of 46.55 seconds.
Other medals winners were Karli Olsen's third-place finish in the 400-meter dash in 61.75 seconds, while Shayna Stevermer was right behind in fourth place with 62.61 seconds.
Olsen also took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 2 1/2 inches.
USC/AC's Emily Mantor covered eight laps in a record time of 11:14.27 to win the 3,200-meter run. Teammate Bethany Koziolek won the fifth-place medal in 11:59.74.
The Rebels' Andrea Escherich took fourth place in the 1,600-meter run in 5:34.37.
Also, USC/AC's 4 x 100 foursome of Mikayla Gormley, Kendall Ward, Anissa Janzig and Linsey Thisius posted a fourth-place time of 51.66.
On the boys' side, the Bucs had four individual champions.
Senior Josh Johnson won the shot put with a toss of 50 feet, 7 inches and took home a gold medal in the discus with a mark of 142 feet, 2 inches.
Senior pole vault standout Jake Zebedee cleared 15 feet, 3 inches to take first, while fellow senior Jacob Olson was first in the 200-meter dash in 23.53 seconds.
In the 100-meter dash, junior Nick Beattie was clocked in 11.61 seconds to finish second and earn a state bid.
Sam Lee won the bronze medal in the shot put competition with a third-place toss of 48 feet, 4 1/2 inches.
Taking sixth place in the high jump was Isaac Darrington, clearing the bar at 5 feet, 11 inches.
The Buc 4 x 100-meter relay barely missed the state standard of 44.43 seconds to qualify for state.
Beattie, Justin Ritter, Olson and Zebedee passed the baton in 44.85 seconds to finish third.
The top medal finisher for the Rebels was Dylan Baumann's fourth place in the 1,600-meter run in 4:40.71.
Tyler Lackey earned a sixth-place medal in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.37 seconds.
And, the 4 x 400-meter relay took sixth place in 3:41.55.
Members of the squad are Baumann (53.4), Lackey (53.8), Brett Stevermer (53.3) and John Schuster (60.0).
