Krista Hassing

A Buccaneer athlete since childhood, Krista Hassing still hasn’t lost her competitive drive which has resulted in a very successful year.

The senior at Blue Earth Area High School plays volleyball, basketball, runs track and still manages to participate in many other extracurricular activities throughout the school year.

“I have always been competitive,” she says.

Being the youngest in her family, she was always looking up to her older siblings.

“They played sports and I always wanted to do everything they did,” Hassing adds.

So, as soon as she was able to, she joined Community Ed sports teams.

“I guess I’ve been playing volleyball and basketball ever since,” she says.

Hassing was the middle hitter for the Bucs volleyball team. The season ended with a 21-10 overall record and a 9-1 record in the South Central Conference.

“Winning in the conference was a great accomplishment for us this year,”?she says. “It’s also always great to beat New Richland (NRHEG) because they usually beat us.”

Hassing was named All-State Honorable Mention for volleyball on Nov. 7, a recognition that can be added on to her list of achievements.

“I was All-State in track, All-Area player of the year, and All-Conference,” she says, trying not to leave out any of her recent honors.

As her high school volleyball career came to an end this season, her last season in high school basketball is just beginning.

The girls basketball team started practice on Monday, Nov. 12. Hassing predicts she will play post but will take whichever position on the court that Coach Al Cue puts her.

“We have a young team again this year,” she says. “So we will have to get used to how we all work together as a team.”

Hassing says that working on team chemistry is a challenge most teams face at the beginning of a season.

“I will miss playing basketball here,” she adds. “There are a lot of memories with the girls on the team.”

On Friday, Nov. 16, Hassing signed on to play with the Minnesota State University-Mankato volleyball team next year.

She considered several other choices for college before deciding on becoming an MSU Maverick.

“I looked into Winona and Augustana,” Hassing says. “The MSU coach was persistent enough so I ultimately decided on going to Mankato.”

The Blue Earth native admits she will miss the time she has spent at the school here, but is ready to move on.

“I’m really excited for the next chapter in my life,” Hassing says. “I’m ready to experience some new challenges for myself.”

She plans on participating in the nursing program at MSU and eventually hopes to become an anesthetist.

But, she is not planning to sit still while she waits for the next chapter in her life to begin. She has plenty of things keeping her busy during her last year of high school.

Track is one thing that will occupy her time in the spring this year.

“Last year in track I earned the title Mama Krista,” she jokes.

Having a lot of younger people on the team meant many of the members would ask for her guidance at times.

“I always had my sister to help me out when I started in sports. So, I’m glad the younger girls could look to me for advice, too,” she adds.

Her goals for the track season are to achieve state on both a team level and an individual level.

Aside from three sports, Hassing’s activities include; choir, band, Madrigals, peer-helping, yearbook, National Honor Society, volunteering with the blood drive, and that’s just to name a few.

“I also like to help out with the basketball and volleyball camps for kids,”?she adds. “That’s always a lot of fun.”

Hassing jokes that with such a busy schedule she should have no problem when it comes time to tackle her college courses next year.

“I definitely think I have the time management thing down,” she says with a laugh.

And believe it or not, she does have time for a little fun, too.

“Oh yeah, I make time,” she says. “You have to have some fun, too.”
