BEA track teams achieve gold level academic honors

By Staff | Jun 23, 2013

Blue Earth Area’s track and field teams had amazing seasons this spring. Their superior skills on the field and track was not all they had going for them, however.

Both teams earned the gold level for team academic honors, which means they had an average GPA of 3.75 or higher.

The boys had an average GPA of 3.84 while the girls averaged 3.94, almost a perfect 4.0.

Not only did the teams earn that high honor but also some freshmen and senior students earned the Academic All-State honors this season.

The seniors were Nick Beattie, Krista Hassing, Taylor Olson and Steven Plocker.

The freshmen were Paige Darrington, Anne Franta, Taylor Grandgenett, Miranda Johnson and Karli Olsen.

“We usually have some individual Academic All-Staters each year, and sometimes both teams achieve that gold level,” says coach Tom Plocker.

The criteria for Academic All-State honors are:

being a ninth-12th grader;

having a cumulative GPA of at least 3.6; and

earned all-conference in at least one event, or

qualified for the State Meet, or

achieved one of the standards on the raceberryjam honor roll.

According to Plocker, raceberryjam.com is a site dedicated to running-related things in Minnesota.

“The honor roll on there is a way for coaches and athletes to see performances from around the state each season,” says Plocker.

Plocker also points out that there were several other athletes who ranked high enough in the academic areas, but did not have the qualifications from the track to make the honors list.
