Wanda Lee (Zentner) Nichols was born on Nov. 1, 1930, in Illinois. A depression-era orphan, she was adopted by Sam and Elizabeth Zentner as a newborn and raised as an only child. She grew up in Winnebago and graduated from Winnebago High School. She married Harold Toppin of Winnebago in 1948 and had three sons: Ron (Cindy) Toppin, of Hastings, Bob (Mary Jo) Toppin, of Burnsville, and Rick (Katie) Toppin, of Marietta, Ga. Wanda worked at the Winnebago Enterprise newspaper for a number of years before moving into advertising sales for KBEW Radio where she worked for more than 30 years until her retirement in 2000. She was known for her outgoing personality, energy, and passion for advertising sales and she did her absolute best to keep every woman’s clothing store that she walked into in business. In addition to shopping, Wanda’s hobbies included gardening, dancing, painting, crafts, ceramics and she sang in the United Methodist Church choir in Winnebago for many years. She also loved to travel every winter to a new, warm destination.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, George, in 2008.
