Fast start fuels Pirates to 12-2 win over Spiders

The Blue Earth Pirates took control of the game against the Cleveland Spiders early and often on their way to a commanding 12-2 win last Wednesday night.

In the first inning, the Pirates batted around the order and produced five early runs, off of four Pirate hits and three Spider wild pitches.

Aaron Wendt continued his hot streak by hitting a double and was credited with two RBI. He ended the game going 2 for 5 with three RBI.

Lee Hodges hit a single up the middle to bring home two more runs. Hodges finished the game going 3 for 4, with two RBI, a walk and a base on balls from being hit by a pitch.

Pirates pitcher, Brady Olsen pitched seven innings, giving up two runs, nine hits and struck out six Cleveland batters.

The Pirates added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning off a double from Cody Sukalski, who finished 1 for 2 with two RBI.

Four more runs were added in the fifth inning for the Pirates.

The Spiders left 11 men on base and put together two runs in the seventh inning.

This was the second meeting against the Spiders this year for the Pirates.

In their first game, the Pirates won 11-1 and Brandyn Olsen and Sukalski only gave up three hits.

In two meetings with the Spiders, Wendt has five RBI and four hits.

Pirates 8, Royals 0

The Pirates continued their winning ways fueled by Lee Hodges complete game shut-out in an 8-0 route of the Minnesota Lake Royals on June 22.

Hodges improved his record to 3-1, allowing seven hits and had four strikeouts. On the year he has a 1.040 ERA and leads the team with 20 strikeouts in four games.

Aaron Wendt started the scoring off for the Pirates (7-1) in the first inning by hitting his third home run of the year. He drove in three runners and finished the game 2 for 5 with three RBI.

The Pirates brought in three more runs in the sixth inning and added one more in the seventh.

Nine of the 12 batters had at least one hit in the game for the Pirates. Overall, the team finished with 13 hits.

In the last three games, the Pirates have a combined total of 38 hits and have only given up three runs.

John Franta (2 for 5), Hodges (1 for 3), Zach Dahl (1 for 1) and Cody Sukalski (2 for 4) all had at least one RBI.

Sukalski is leading the team with an impressive .473 batting average; Franta has also contributed a .423 average for the Pirates.

TJ Schmidtke is leading the team with 10 RBI and is fifth on the team with a .343 batting average.

The Pirates took on the Wells Wildcats this past Friday, June 27, a game played after the Faribault County Register deadline. Details will be included in the next Register. They also play the Morristown Morries on Saturday, June 28, in Blue Earth at 7:30 p.m. and face the New Richland Reds in Blue Earth on Sunday, June 29, at 2 p.m.
