Buc golfers off to Sections

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer girls and boys golf teams are pictured above in the clubhouse at North Links Golf Course in Mankato at the end of the Sub-section Golf Meet last Tuesday. The girls are, left to right, Malorie Scholtes, Mateja Lane, Natali Fellows, Signe Olson, Kaitlyn Olsen, Coach Carol Weerts and in the front, Olivia Myers.

On a rainy, wet, chilly day, when other golfers worried about the weather and trying to keep a grip on their clubs, Blue Earth Area golfer Natali Fellows turned on the heat and blistered the course, taking medalist honors at the Subsection 2AA, South Girls Golf Meet held at North Links Golf Course in Mankato last Tuesday, May 26.

Fellows not only played the best 18 holes of her career and won the Subsection championship, her score was an incredible 13 strokes lower than her next closest competitor.

The Buccaneer shot a 40 on the front nine and followed it up with a 38 on the back nine for a 78 total. The next lowest score was a 91 shot by Sam Nielsen of Albert Lea.

“Natali did a great job of staying focused and she was playing smart on the course,” Buc coach Carol Weerts says. “If she made a bad shot, she made up for it with the next one much better.”

Fellows had a problem on hole No. 7, one of the hardest on the course.

Her tee shot went out of bounds. But she recovered with a great third shot, followed by a layup fourth shot in front of a hazard, then a fifth shot that went three feet from the pin. A putt gave her a bogie six on the par five.

Fellows will not be the only Buc girl golfer who will head to the Section 2AA Golf Meet this week. Eighth grader Mateja Lane shot a 112 and placed eighth on the qualifying list of the top 10 golfers who are not on one of the top two winning teams. Lane shot a steady pair of 56s on both the front and back nines to get her 112 tally.

As a team, the Bucs had a score of 434, which put them into fourth place out of the eight teams in the Subsection.

Albert Lea won the Subsection with a score of 391, while Mankato East shot a 408. Both teams will head to the Section Meet, both as team contenders as well as having each of their players contesting for individual rights to head to the State Golf Meet.

Buc golfers off to Sections

The boys team, left to right, is Tate Thielfoldt, Gaven Bruellman, Zach Curtis, Connor Thielfoldt, Hunter Spencer and coach Travis Armstrong.

The two seniors on the Blue Earth Area Buccaneer boys golf team are both going to head to the Section 2AA Golf Meet in New Prague on Monday of this week.

Connor Thielfoldt and Zach Curtis both qualified for the Section by placing in the top 10 golfers who are not on one of the top two teams at the Sub-section 2AA South Meet at North Links Golf Course in Mankato last Tuesday.

Thielfoldt actually topped that list, coming in with the second lowest score of the day, a 77. He shot a 37 on the front nine and followed it up with a 40 on the back nine.

Curtis shot a 41 on the front nine and came in with a 42 on the back nine, for a total of 83. That score put him tied for second on the top 10.

“The soggy weather did not dampen Connor’s or Zach’s efforts,” coach Travis Armstrong says. “Many of the players were worried about the weather, to the point of taking their mind off the task at hand.”

As a team the Bucs shot a 385, putting them into fifth place. Hunter Spencer came in with a 106 (47-59) and Gaven Bruellman carded a 119 (55-64) to add to the Bucs’ team tally. The other Buc varsity contender was Tate Thielfoldt who came in with a 126 (66-60).

“The three younger guys struggled more because the course gets a lot longer (in bad weather) and the rough gets very hard to hit out of for the guys that do not have higher club head speeds,” Armstrong explained. “I think it was a great learning experience for them, and I am sure they will be better prepared for wet conditions in the future. But not one of them complained about the all day rain, even though they had trouble hanging onto their clubs and finding dry ground from which to hit from for the majority of the day.”

Mankato East took top team honors with a 307 and
