Buccaneer tennis team stays perfect

By Staff | Sep 27, 2015

Natali Fellows played No. 2 singles last week in the Buccaneer’s victory against the Waseca Bluejays.

Still perfect.

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer girls tennis team completed another clean sweep of an opponent when they downed the Fairmont Cardinals 7-0 in Blue Earth last Thursday afternoon.

It gave the BEA girls a 13-0 unbeaten record and notched a 4-0 season tally in the Big South Conference.

Only one of the seven matches last Thursday was even closely contested.

But, that battle at No. 1 doubles went to three sets, that final one lasting a long time before a Buc victory was declared.

Angie Cyphers and Gracie Leland teamed up for BEA and took on Cardinals Ellie Tonder and Madi Plumhoff.

The Buc duo lost the first set 6-4 but came back and won the second set by the same 6-4 score.

The deciding third set went all the way to 12-10 before the Buccaneer team took the win.

The other matches were not that close.

Karli Olsen took a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over Abby Fitzgerald. At No. 2 singles, Natali Fellows cruised to a 6-1, 6-1, win against Learen Carlson.

Annika Wilhelmi, at No. 3 singles, swept Brittany Bass 6-0, 6-0, and at No. 4 singles, Paige Darrington downed Sydney Hauny 6-1, 6-0.

Buccaneers Lacey Benz and Annaliese Klinkner teamed up at No. 2 doubles for a 6-3, 6-3 win over Morgan Cihoski and Hayley Fogeison.

And, it was Julia Hanson and Malarie Scholtes who completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles over the Cards’ Kaitlyn Cihoski and Emily O’Conner.

This week the Bucs will be participating in the BSC crossover match on Tuesday, before hosting River Valley on Thursday.

BEA 7, New Ulm 0

Count it as another shutout for the Blue Earth Area Buccaneer girls tennis team.

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, the Bucs traveled to New Ulm and came back home with a 7-0 win over the Eagles.

The win upped the maroon and gold’s Big South Conference record to a perfect 3-0. It also kept their overall season record an unblemished 12-0.

BEA’s only real challenge in the match at New Ulm came at No. 3 doubles.

The Buccaneer duo of Julia Hanson and Malarie Scholtes, both sophomores, took on a couple of Eagle sophomores, Breann Widmer and Shelby Haseman.

It was a hard-fought battle, but the BEA teammates won the match with a score of 7-6, (7-2), 6-7.

At No. 1 singles, Karli Olsen took a 6-0, 6-4 win over Taylor Boldwan. Natali Fellows came through with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Maya Sarker.

Buccaneer Anikka Wilhelmi took the victory at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Rose Dobis. And Paige Darrington cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 4 singles spot, downing the Eagles’ Sara Guyman.

BEA’s No. 1 doubles team of Angie Cyphers and Gracie Leland teamed up for a 6-1, 6-2, win over Melech Reinhart and Emma Mandal.

At No. 2 doubles, Lacey Benz and Annaliese Klinkner combined to defeat Abbey Frauenholtz and Jane Arnoldt, 6-4, 6-4.

BEA 6, Waseca 1

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer girls tennis team continued to pile up the victories.

And, last Monday night, the Bucs won against a team that they have not defeated in at least 15 years.

The Waseca Bluejays.

“I know we have not beaten them in the last 10 years,” Coach Konny Wolff says. “And I talked to (former coach Terry) Barnes and he said it has been at least 15 years.”

Coach Wolff says all the girls played very well on Monday night and she is very proud of the whole team.

“They (Waseca) beat us last year 6-1,” Wolff says. “So I was very concerned about the match (on Monday). Last year we had a lot of depth to our team, but we came through on Monday when we needed to, and played well.”

The Bucs downed the ‘Jays by the same 6-1 score that they had lost to Waseca by last year. But, several of the matches were pretty close, with three of them going to three sets.

BEA swept all four singles and had one loss in the doubles competition.

Karli Olsen got things rolling for the Buccaneers with a barn-burner at No. 1 singles.

After losing the first set 6-3, Olsen came back and downed Bluejay Anna Hoehn 6-4 in the second set.

Then she cruised to the win with a 10-1 third set score.

Playing at No. 2 singles, Natali Fellows dispatched her Waseca opponent, Maddy Knoll, 6-3, 6-3. And Anikka Wilhelmi defeated Ella Seehafer at No. 3 singles with a score of 6-2, 6-3.

Paige Darrington also had little trouble at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Taylor Pfeifer.

It took three sets, but the Buc duo of Angie Cyphers and Gracie Leland defeated Halle Mercier and Aly Storjohann, 6-0, 1-6, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles.

It was Lacey Benz and Annaliese Klinkner who downed Sydney O’Brien and Melise Baumgarn at the No. 2 doubles spot, 6-3, 7-5.

Julia Hanson and Malarie Scholtes took Liz Platte and Anna Johnson all the way to three sets at No. 3 doubles.

But, after losing the first set 6-3 and winning the second set by the same 6-3 score, the Buc duo lost the third set in a dramatic 11-9 battle.

The win was the 11th victory for the No. 7 Class A ranked Buccaneers, with no losses. They are now 2-0 in the Big South Conference.
