As the final score would indicate, Pirates pitching struggled mightily against the Bears in Cannon Falls on Aug. 12. A total of five errors only compounded Blue Earth's frustration.

After a 7-0 start to the season and plenty of thrills along the way, the 2017 Blue Earth Pirates made it to their 15th consecutive state Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament. Front row left to right: Robert Olson, Kane Malo, John Franta, Alan Davids, Kaylan Legred, Trent Sonnicksen, Bat Boy Cameron Hodges. Back row left to right: Cody Sukalski, Brandyn Olsen, TJ Schmidtke, Aaron Wendt, Lee Hodges, Christopher Jenkins, Garrett Anderson. After four innings, Blue Earth enjoyed a 3-0 advantage. However, Cannon Falls answered back with five runs in the fifth, and four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.

Offensively, Aaron Wendt and Lee Hodges each enjoyed multi-hit games while collecting 3 RBIs between them. In total, the Pirates collected 10 hits in the ballgame.

Alan Davids took the loss for Blue Earth as he surrendered five earned runs in just 1 2/3 innings of work. Fortunately for the Pirates, their berth in the state tournament was already a foregone conclusion.

BE Pirates 6,

Wells Wildcats 0

These two teams had met four previous times during the season. Each team was able to snatch two wins in this intense rivalry. Fittingly, these bitter foes would have to battle it out once more. This time around, a state tournament bid was at stake.

Catcher Bobby Olson chipped in with a solo home run while TJ Schmidtke, Kaylan Legred, and Brandyn Olsen all had their bats pumping through the strike zone with two hits a piece for the Pirates.

As a team, Blue Earth was able to collect 10 hits in the game compared to only two for Wells. On the mound for Blue Earth, Hodges was in cruise control throughout the game and recorded the win.

BE Pirates 7,

MN Lake Royals 4

In what would be the first of three games on the afternoon, Blue Earth handled Minnesota Lake in the 4C Region playoff bracket. It also happened to be the rubber match of their season series with the Royals.

It was a tight game after two innings with Blue Earth having a 3-2 advantage. Eventually, the Pirates added two more runs in the third and seventh innings to pull away. Hodges led the way offensively with hits in all four of his plate appearances. This stellar performance included two doubles, two RBIs, and a run scored.

Not to be outdone, Pirates' outfielder John Franta also chipped in with two hits and two runs batted in.

BE headed out to Norwood for a showdown against the Fort Ripley Rebels on Saturday, Aug. 19. Results will be available in the next edition of the Faribault County Register.
