Cross country boys and girls pick up the pace

Both Blue Earth Area Cross Country teams placed fifth at the Maple River Invite held Sept. 14 at Daly Park.

The conditions were not perfect, however, the Buccaneers still gave it their all.

BEA's girls team had a total of 82 points for fifth place while Maple River beat them out for fourth place with 78 points. Third place went to Minnesota Valley Lutheran with 72 points, while neighboring school district United South Central earned second place with 70 points. It was Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/ Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton that earned first with 58 points.

Kaitlin Johnson is still on a hot streak, earning ninth place overall with a time of 24:28 in the 5000 meter run.

Melissa Hagedorn also improved her time, earning 11th for the meet with a time of 24:40.

Other Girls Results:

Girls Varsity- 5000 meters: Callie Stevermer (25:26), Arianna Nagel (27:00), Gabby Weerts (27:15), Emma Germain (28:26), Amanda Jacobson (31:49).

Girls JH- 1600 meters: Elizabeth Jacobson (8:45), Jazmin Lopez (9:01).

Boys Results:

The BEA boys also finished in fifth, but with 109 points for the meet. Sibley East was able to nab fourth place with 108 points, and WEM/JWP earned third with 101 points. Maple River earned second with 88 points while USC?earned first for their boys team with 86 points.

Though the boys finished fifth as a team, Grant Strukel pulled ahead of the pack to finish first as an individual, finishing the 5000 meter race with a time of 18:03.

Teammate Brady Olsen also had a great run for the Maple River Invite, earning fifth place with a time of 19:34.

"Grant pulled away the last two miles to seize victory today," said head coach Tom Plocker. "Brady put forth a gritty race to secure his first Maple River medal."

The head coach also mentioned a number of the BEA boys improved their personal records while Jacob Dikken and Blake Townsend both had season bests at the meet.

Other Girls Results:

Boys Varsity- 5000 meters: Jacob Dikken (21:51), Gunnar Fering (22:34), Eric Becker (23:04), Cameron Germain (23:06), Blake Townsend (24:07).

Boys JH- 1600 meters: Angel Martinez (7:11), Alex Dikken (7:46), Shane Levenhagen (8:25), Carson Strukel (8:44).

The Buccaneers' next meet is set to take place at the Loon Lake Golf Course in Jackson on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 4:30 p.m. against Jackson County Central.
