Bucs earn first win of the year

By Staff | May 6, 2018

A Blue Earth Area softball player keeps her eye on the ball to see if the pitch is wide of the plate during softball action last week at the 14th Street Softball Field. Softball and other spring sports are heating up.

The Buccaneers softball team (1-5) were unable to string together their second consecutive win last Tuesday as they fell to the Windom Eagles, 8-4, on May 1.

It was a rough outing for BEA pitcher McKenna Dutton as she allowed seven earned runs in three innings of work for the Buccaneers. In fact, the Eagles were able to score six of their eight runs in the first inning.

Meanwhile, Lauren Madetzke fared better on the mound for the Bucs as she did not allow an earned run in her three innings on the rubber.

Madetzke also added a run batted in and a run scored for the Bucs. Teammate Emma Dahl contributed to the Buc offense with a run batted in as well. Carla Leyva, Sydney Blagg and Dutton each scored a run in the game.

Despite the setback, Buc head coach Terry Ehlert is encouraged with the competitive spirit his team has shown during the young season.

“We are a fairly young team this year, but I think the kids are starting to believe and trust in one another,” Ehlert said. “Even though we were down early, we didn’t give up, and that was good to see.”

The girls from Blue Earth Area were back on their home field for a May 4 double-header against Worthington. Results of these games will be available in next week’s edition of the Faribault County Register.

BEA 5, Waseca 4

On Friday, April 27, Blue Earth Area lost both games of a double-header against New Ulm by a combined score of 35-0.

Undeterred with an 0-4 start to begin their season, the Bucs were able to defeat the Waseca Bluejays 5-4 in Blue Earth on Monday, April 30. First-year Bucs softball head coach Terry Ehlert says limiting mistakes was the key to victory as his squad committed just one error in the ballgame.

“By minimizing our errors and making the routine plays, it puts your pitching staff at ease a little bit,” Ehlert said afterwards. “The kids played really well and we benefited from some timely hitting.”

Starting Buc pitcher Lauren Madetzke pitched a complete game and rang up 10 strikeouts in the process, while allowing just two earned runs and two walks. She also contributed at the plate with a two-run double and a single for the Buccaneers.

Sydney Blagg helped the Blue Earth Area cause as well, with two hits and came around to score two Buc runs. Meanwhile, teammate Adrianna Granillo used her wheels to motor around the bases for a two-run triple and a run scored. Miya Gustafson also recorded a hit for the maroon and gold.

New Ulm 23, BEA 0

New Ulm 12, BEA 0

In the second game of Blue Earth Area’s April 27 double-header against New Ulm, the Buccaneers were shut out by a wide margin. McKenna Dutton pitched three innings and struck out two batters. Dutton, as well as Jackie Quintero, each contributed a hit for the Buccaneers in the four inning ballgame which featured a 23-run outburst by New Ulm.

The first game of the double dip saw Blue Earth Area lose by a final of 12-0. Lauren Madetzke pitched all five innings of the game while Emma Dahl recorded the Bucs’ only hit.
