The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer boys golf team pulled off one of their goals for the 2018 season.

Winning the Big South Conference Golf Tournament. That is something they did not do last year.

The Buc boys shot their lowest team score of the season a 312 total which gave them the BSC Championship last Monday, May 21.

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers were able to capture the top spot in the Big South Conference title on Monday, May 21. BEA’s team score of 312 was 16 strokes better than the second place finisher. In addition to their team success, Hunter Spencer (pictured), Manning Lane, Gaven Bruellman and Braden Gudahl were the four Buc golfers who earned BSC All-Conference recognition.

Jackson County Central was second with 328 and Worthington was third with 330. There were 12 teams competing.

In addition, all four low scoring BEA varsity players made All-BSC Conference honors.

Manning Lane, Gaven Bruellman and Braden Gudahl received All-Conference medals, while Hunter Spencer received an All-Conference Certificate. The top 10 place winners received medals while the next 11 placers got a certificate for All-Conference.

"I was happy that all four of the top golfers were able to accomplish the feat of making All-Conference this year," Buc coach Travis Armstrong said. "It is a great warm up for the section tournament because the outcome was based on just this day's results."

In the past players have been able to accrue points throughout the season as well as at the conference tournament in an effort to make All-Conference, the coach noted. With the poor weather this spring, it was determined that everything would be decided at this tournament in Waseca, he added.

At the tourney last Monday in Waseca, Lane led the Buccaneers with a 74, good for second place in the conference and just one stroke off Carter Doose of St. Peter's medalist score of 73.

Bruellman came in with a score of 78, good for sixth place, Gudahl a 79 for eighth place and Spencer an 81 for 13th place.

In addition, Blue Earth Area's other two varsity players, Ashton Lloyd and Caleb Beeler, shot a 91 and 97 respectively.

"I feel these results show our depth as our greatest asset," coach Armstrong said. "We do not have an outright best player, rather we have four guys that are capable of being our low score on any given day, and two more that could shoot a score that we could count toward the team total."

The Buccaneer mentor says Monday was Lane's day to go low, by making birdies on the last two holes.

"The individual accolades are nice, but we have been focusing on the team aspect this season," the coach explains. "As a group they picked a fine day to shoot their lowest team score of the season. I am hoping we can ride this momentum into the section tournament coming up."

That Section Boys Golf Tournament was this past Friday, May 25, after the deadline for this week's Faribault County Register. Details will be included in the next edition.
