On May 22, the Blue Earth Area Bucs softball squad traveled to Jordan for their first round Class 2 AA Section 2 playoff matchup.

Playing as the 15 seed, and facing the second seeded Jaguars, the Bucs performed admirably, but eventually fell 2-0 to the higher seed.

BEA starting pitcher Lauren Madetzke pitched six innings and surrendered a single earned run while striking out five.

The Bucs softball team finished the 2018 season with one more win than they had the year before. First year head coach Terry Ehlert noted the progress his squad has made and expects even more improvement in 2019. Above, Blue Earth Area’s Lauren Madetzke pitches in front of the home crowd earlier this season.

The only runs of the contest were scored by Jordan in the fifth inning. Although BEA's Sydney Blagg and McKenna Dutton did their best to start a rally with a hit apiece, the Buccaneers were unable to push any runs across. Despite the loss, Buc softball coach Terry Ehlert was proud of how his team competed against the much higher seeded Jaguars.

"Our pitching gave us a chance to win, and our defense made some plays and backed each other up," Ehlert said afterwards. "I was really happy with how the kids kept working, it was a great softball game to watch."

The Buccaneers end their 2018 campaign with a 3-14 record. However, with two late season victories against Cannon Falls and Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther/Truman, along with the highly competitive showing in Jordan, Ehlert believes his team is headed in the right direction.

"The culture has changed, and the kids can see the difference for themselves," Ehlert said. "I told them before the season not to worry about their record. Just go out there and compete, and that's what we are doing right now."

BEA 9, Cannon Falls 2

Medford 8, BEA 2

The Buccaneers earned a win in one of their double-header games in Medford on Thursday, May 17.

In the first contest against Cannon Falls, BEA pitcher McKenna Dutton pitched brilliantly as she allowed just three hits and one earned run in seven innings. Dutton also helped the Buc cause on offense by adding two hits and scored a pair of runs.

Meanwhile, Adrianna Granillo contributed with three hits and four runs batted in for the maroon and gold. Miya Gustafson and Lauren Madetzke combined to produce three more RBIs for the Buccaneers. Sydney Blagg also chipped in with three runs scored.

In the second game, Blue Earth Area was defeated by Medford by a score of 8-2. Bucs pitcher Lauren Madetzke allowed six earned runs and eight hits in six innings of work. Offensively, Gustafson led BEA with two hits while Dutton, Granillo, Madetzke and Emma Dahl all recorded a hit in the game for the Bucs.
