Pirates gear up for region tourney

BE heads to postseason play on five-game winning streak

August 5, 2018

The Blue Earth Pirates (16-7) wrapped up their 2018 regular season campaign riding a five game winning streak.

During that span, Blue Earth has utterly dominated the competition. While the Pirates' offense has accounted for 44 runs during their winning streak, they have surrendered just eight runs to their opposition.

Lately, Blue Earth's offense has had a knack for stringing together big innings. The Pirates enjoyed a nine-run inning in their last contest against Eagle Lake, a seven-run inning against Cleveland on July 22, a five-run inning against Wells on July 21, and a six-run frame against Fairmont on July 18.

Pitcher Garrett Anderson has been one of the many key contributors to another winning season for the Blue Earth Pirates in 2018.

According to Pirates manager and starting pitcher Lee Hodges, several players have contributed to Blue Earth's late season success.

"There's not one guy who is outperforming everybody else, it's been a total team effort," Hodges says. "It seems like we've been able to put together big offensive innings and we've scored runs in bunches."

As the Pirates shift their attention to the postseason, they look to qualify for the Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament for the 16th consecutive year. In order to make that goal a reality, Blue Earth must continue their stellar play this weekend in the Region 6C tournament. Hodges says his team will not deviate from their normal game plan.

"We've just got to continue to score runs and rely on our good pitching," Hodges explains. "For the most part, everybody is healthy, so we are looking forward to having a productive run."

On Saturday, Aug. 4, Blue Earth began their regional competition with a home contest against Henderson. Results from that game will be available in next week's edition of the Faribault County Register.
