So close, but just not close enough.

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer girls tennis team fell just short in their quest to win the Section 3A Team Tennis Tournament and earn a trip to the State Tournament.

The Bucs fell to the St. James Saints 4-3 in the championship round of the Section Tourney, held at Gustavus Adolphus College last Thursday.

The Buccaneers had earlier on Thursday defeated the Fairmont Cardinals 6-1 in the semifinals, to earn a spot in the championship round later in the same day.

St. James 4, BEA 3

The Bucs took two wins in singles and one in doubles in the championship match.

Macie Stevermer defeated Ellie Becker 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 3 singles, and McKenna Dutton downed Luci Kulseth 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.

It was the Buc duo of Sydney Blagg and Britt Howard who downed Miranda Tetloff and Noel Westcott, 6-2, , 7-6 (8-6), in their No. 2 doubles match.

Ta Armstrong lost 6-0, 6-1, to Renata Hernandez at No. 1 singles and Arika Howard fell 6-6-2, 6-1, to Zoie Becker at No. 2 singles.

Maddie McCleary and Carissa Engesser lost 6-4, 6-1, to Hannah Loewen-Jaelyn Haler at No. 1 doubles and Cali Beyer and Lyndsey Borris lost 6-0, 4-6, 6-4, to Gabriela Trapero and Mya Hanson at No. 3 doubles.

BEA 6, Fairmont 1

The Buccaneers cruised to a big win over Fairmont in the semifinal round.

At No. 3 singles, Buccaneer Macie Stevermer shut out Maggy Totzke 6-0, 6-0, while McKenna Dutton defeated Briana Joseph at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-2.

Maddie McCleary and Carissa Engesser fell to Brittany Bass and Lauren Green, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles.

The Buccaneers entered the Individual Singles and Doubles Tournament action on Friday, Oct. 5 and details will be included in the next edition of the Faribault County Register.

BEA 6, Luverne 1

It was not easy, but the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers finally came away with a 6-1 win over Luverne in the Section Team Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon.

It wasn't easy because several of the matches were quite close, three members of the team were injured and one was sick, and because it was difficult to get the match with the Cardinals even played.

The match was originally slated to be played on Monday, but was postponed to Tuesday due to rainy conditions. On Tuesday the Luverne team arrived in Blue Earth to play, but the courts were still wet from rain. School and community members tried to dry off the courts, but it could not be done.

Both teams headed to Worthington to play, because there had not been any rain there and their courts were dry. But, as soon as they arrived there it started to rain and the match had to be postponed again to Wednesday. And once again it started to rain in Blue Earth.

Both teams packed up again, and this time they headed to Owatonna to play on their indoor courts and got the match done.

BEA was without Maddie McCleary, who was out with an injury.

Four of the seven matches went to three sets, but the Bucs won them all except fourth doubles.

Ta Armstrong started things off with a win for the maroon and gold with a big win at No. 1 singles. She defeated Carissa Cunningham 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-5, in a long battle.

Arika Howard had an easier time of it at No. 2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-3, over Riley Sivertson. At No. 3 singles Macie Stevermer also cruised to a win over Ainslie Robinson, 6-2, 6-1.

McKenna Dutton took a three set victory over Liz Kelm at No. 4 singles, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles action, Buccaneers Carissa Engesser and Sydney Blagg teamed up at No. 1 doubles to win 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, over Roz Oye and Eliise Jarchow.

At No. 2 doubles, Britt Howard and Cali Beyer defeated Brynn Their and Mela Jarchow, 7-5, 6-3.

Lyndsey Borris and Kylie Rosenau fell in a three set battle, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, to Solveig Tofteland and Lauren Versteeg at No. 4 doubles.

The win sent the Bucs to the semi-finals of the Section, where they played Fairmont at 11 a.m. Luckily the match had already been set for the indoor courts at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

Bucs at St. James Quad

The Buccaneers participated in a quadrangular individual tournament in St. James on Saturday, Sept. 29, and came home with five team members earning medals.

Ta Armstrong and Arika Howard teamed up to play at a No. 1 doubles team position and ended up taking first place.

Then Macie Stevermer and McKenna Dutton also teamed up to play in the No. 2 doubles bracket, and they also took first place.

Kylie Rosenau, a BEA varsity alternate, took second place in the fourth singles bracket.
