Boys start the season with four wins

Koby Nagel makes solid contact in a game against Martin County West which was played at the fairgrounds in Blue Earth. The Bucs had a good week and were victorious over MCW, Fairmont and New Ulm.

The Blue Earth Area baseball team improved their record to 4-0 in the young season with three wins in four days beginning with a 10-run victory over Martin County West on Saturday, April 6. The Bucs rattled off consecutive Big South Conference wins on Monday and Tuesday, April 8 and 9 to remain undefeated this season

BEA 5, New Ulm 4

Blue Earth Area played host to the New Ulm Eagles on Tuesday, April 9, and came away with a 5-4 victory.

The game was originally scheduled to be played in New Ulm but was moved to Blue Earth due to work which was still being completed on New Ulm’s baseball field.

New Ulm got a runner to first base with one out in the first inning, but Buccaneer catcher Karson Legred’s throw to shortstop Koby Nagel thwarted an attempted steal of second base and the Eagles were held scoreless for the inning.

BEA had a strong start at the plate and put up three runs in the home half of the first. Anders Fering provided the big hit with a double which resulted in two runs crossing the plate. The Bucs added another run in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead after two complete innings.

New Ulm chipped away at the Bucs’ lead, scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings to narrow the Bucs’ lead to 4-2.

Neither team would score until the top of the seventh inning when the Eagles scored two runs to forge a 4-4 tie.

Karson Legred walked to give BEA a man on base in the home half of the seventh inning. He advanced to second base when Hunter Bleess was hit by a pitch. Koby Nagel came through with a two-out single which scored Legred and gave the Bucs the win.

Gavin Storbeck pitched the complete game for BEA allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked five to record the win.

Legred had a good day at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.

Nagel went 2-for-4 with a run scored, Bleess was 1-for-2 with one RBI while scoring one run.

BEA 10, Fairmont 9

The Bucs opened Big South Conference play with a 10-9 road victory over the Fairmont Cardinals.

Because of a forecast calling for rain and snow, the game was switched from its original April 12 date and played on April 8.

BEA scored a total of eight runs in the first three innings highlighted by a five-run outburst in the second inning featuring a grand slam home run by Brayden Barnett.

The Cardinals scored one run in the first inning and four in the fourth inning to make it an 8-5 game in favor of the Bucs through four complete innings.

A pinch-hit RBI single by Anders Fering coupled with a sacrifice fly by Barnett brought in two more runs for the Bucs in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 10-5 with BEA on top.

Fairmont rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh and had the bases loaded when relief pitcher Hunter Bleess induced a ground out to end the game and preserve the Buc’s victory.

Keegan O’Brien started and picked up the win for BEA. Koby Nagel came on in the fourth inning and Hunter Bleess took over in the sixth inning.

Barnett finished with five RBIs for the Bucs. Fering, Bleess, and O’Brien each had two hits. Luke Mertens scored three runs while going 1-for-2. Bleess recorded a double and O’Brien scored two runs.

BEA 15, MCW 5

The host Blue Earth Area Buccaneers scored eight runs in the bottom of the third inning on their way to a 15-5, five-inning victory over the Martin County West Mavericks.

The game, played on Saturday, April 6, was the home opener for the Bucs, who improved their record to 2-0.

MCW used an infield hit, two Buccaneer errors, a hit batsman and a walk to push two runs across the plate in the top of the first inning.

BEA got one run back in the bottom of the first inning. Calean Sanders led off with one of his three hits for the day. He stole second base and advanced to third on Brayden Barnett’s infield groundout. Karson Legred’s groundout brought Sanders home for the Buc’s first run.

The Mavericks added another run in their half of the second inning. Payton Anderson coaxed a one-out walk and moved to second when Karson Janssen was hit by a pitch.

Wyatt Geistfeld hit into what looked like an inning-ending double play. The Bucs recorded the force out at second base but there was an error on the relay to first base which allowed Anderson to score.

Trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the second inning, Gavin Storbeck drew a one-out walk and moved to second on Keegan O’Brien’s single. Luke Mertens was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Luke Carr drove in Storbeck with a sacrifice fly and O’Brien scored when Sanders collected his second hit of the day to make it a 3-3 ballgame after two innings.

It was three-up and three-down for the Mavericks in the top of the third inning.

Legred started things off for BEA in the bottom of the third with a double. Hunter Bleess reached on an error which scored Legred with the go-ahead run. With Bleess on second, Koby Nagel stroked an opposite-field single to right field and advanced on the unsuccessful attempt to throw out Bleess at home. The Bucs now led 5-3.

Nagel scored on Storbeck’s single. Storbeck stole second base and gained third base on a balk. O’Brien was hit by a pitch and Mertens walked to fill the bases. Carr singled bringing home Storbeck and O’Brien. Following a groundout, Barnett and Legred both walked to score Mertens. MCW recorded a pop out before Nagel belted a two-run double to give BEA an 11-3 lead.

Neither team scored in the fourth inning. the Mavericks scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to make it an 11-5 ballgame in favor of the Bucs.

Sanders opened the Buc’s half of the fifth inning with his third single of the day. Barnett singled and Sanders scored on an error. Barnett would score later on a wild pitch. Bleess was hit by a pitch and Storbeck walked. Anders Fering then delivered a two-run double down the right-field line to score Bleess and Storbeck giving the Bucs a 10-run lead to end the game.

The Bucs scored 15 runs on 11 hits and had three errors. The Mavericks tallied five runs on four hits while committing four errors.

Sanders picked up the win for the Bucs, holding MCW scoreless over 2 2/3 innings of relief. Sanders recorded three strikeouts and did not walk a Maverick batter. Storbeck started the game and Bleess pitched the final inning in relief.

In addition to Sander’s three hits, Nagel had two doubles and three RBI’s. Carr also drove in three runners with a single and a sacrifice fly.

The Bucs host Worthington on Monday, April 15. The results of that game will be in next week’s addition of the Faribault County Register.
