BE looking at another liquor store manager

May 5, 2019
Chuck Hunt - Register Editor (chunt@faribaultcountyregister.com) , Faribault County Register

A week after having been selected to be the new manager at the Blue Earth Wine and Spirits municipal liquor store, John Oswald decided not to take the position.

City administrator Tim Ibisch says Oswald came into City Hall and informed Ibisch he had decided not to take the job.

"I believe the City Council will now be selecting Dave Olson, who was the second choice of the personnel committee," Ibisch said. "That choice is expected to be confirmed at the council's regular meeting on Monday night, May 6."

Ibisch said that Olson had been contacted and had agreed to take the job, if he is approved by the City Council.

Both Oswald and Olson were among the 16 applicants for the manager position. Five finalists were initially interviewed, then three of those were given a second interview.

Those three finalists, Oswald, Olson and Tammy Davis, were scored on a point system and Oswald had the highest score and was recommended by the committee to be the next manager.

At their meeting on Monday, April 15, the council voted to accept the committee's recommendation and hire Oswald. However, two liquor store employees were at the meeting and questioned the selection. Oswald is the owner of Oswald's Brewery in downtown Blue Earth. Olson was a long-time employee at the liquor store. Davis is a part-time employee there.

Oswald withdrew his name and said he has taken a job with Faribault County.

Olson will begin training with current liquor store manager Craig Wells, who is retiring at the end of June. Olson has been a full time employee at the liquor store since March of 2015, Ibisch said.

"Mr. Olson will be introduced to the council at their meeting on Monday," Ibisch said. "And answer any questions the council may have, before voting on having him as the manager."
