Big year for Relay for Life

25th anniversary for annual county event

August 4, 2019
Chuck Hunt - Register Editor (chunt@faribaultcountyregister.com) , Faribault County Register

The annual Faribault County Relay for Life event is all set for Friday night, Aug. 9, at the Faribault County Fairgrounds.

And this year there is a lot to celebrate. It is the 25th year the cancer fundraiser has been held in Faribault County.

There will be a few extra events at this year's Relay for Life to commemorate the 25 years. For instance, a special video of scenes from all 25 relays will be shown continously during the evening. And, there will be a special quilt display, which is made up of T-shirts from each of the 25 years.

There are also going to be some special surprises at this year's Relay for Life, including a 'twist' on the Ms. Relay Contest.

Relay for Life starts off each year with a community supper at the fairgrounds running from 5-7 p.m. Entertainment begins at 5:15 p.m. and runs to 6:45 p.m., when the opening ceremony begins.

From 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. there is more entertainment, including Faith in Song, Murry Brothers, P-31 and Shellie Berndt.

A silent auction runs from 5-9 p.m., with a live auction at 8 p.m.

The lighting of the luminaries which surround the walkways and streets of the fairgrounds, begins at 9:30 p.m.

This year there is something new with a Prayer Chapel open for those who wish to stop in. It will be in the West Delavan Church on the fairgrounds, and will be open from 7-9 p.m. and 10-11 p.m. It is sponsored by the Blue Earth Ministerial Association.

This year there are 18 relay teams participating in the fundraiser. Some are from a few years back and are returning for the 25th anniversary event.

This year's Honorary Chairman is Diana McTamaney of Blue Earth. A story about McTamaney, as well information on all the activities at the Relay for Life and a list of the names of the teams, is in a special Relay for Life section elsewhere inside this week's Faribault County Register.

In addition to the relay itself, there will also be a Survivor Reception on Monday, Aug. 5, from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the Atrium at the Ag Center in Blue Earth.

All cancer survivors and their relatives are invited to attend the event.
