BEA defeated by JCC in gymnastics

Coach Rachel Cole looks on while Jazmyn Lunz does her dismount from the balance beam.

As the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers hosted the Jackson County Central Huskies last Tuesday, Dec. 17, the local gymnasts continued to show improvement, though they were unable to defeat the visiting team. Be that as it may, head coach Rachel Cole says the team continues to work hard and improve their progress this season.

“The positive takeaways from tonight include Haley Kalis winning bars and all-around, which is a big deal against a team like JCC,” says Cole. “We scored over a 120, we are closer to having a full JV?team, and their team score was nearly double from the last meet.”

Cole admits there were points in the home meet where BEA had some difficulty.

“We struggled big time to stay on the beam tonight. This is the first time in a very long time, if ever, that we’ve scored higher on bars as a team than on beam,” said the coach. “We had a great meet, minus beam. Once we learn how to stay on the beam and add a few new skills, we will be sitting pretty and possibly be in the running to win some of the meets that we have coming up after Christmas break.”

In the varsity division, JCC beat out BEA by just about 12 points. JCC earned a team score of 132.7 while BEA earned 121.525.

As Coach Cole mentioned, Kalis had a prosperous meet at home. She tied for first in varsity bars, earning an average score of 7.65, with JCC’s Emma Dibrito, while teammate Addison Armstrong tied for second place with JCC’s Mikia Brunk with a score of 7.4.

Lauren Survis scored a 7.0 in bars, while Tailor Douglas earned 6.5. Jazmyn Lunz earned a 5.9 for bars.

Varsity vaulter Kalis placed fourth for BEA with an average score of 8.7. Other BEA varsity vault scores include Armstrong’s 8.475 average, Douglas with an 8.2 average, Sydney Blagg with a 7.85 average, and Survis earning a 7.8 score for the meet.

Both beam and floor scores were a little lackluster this meet for the Bucs. BEA was unable to place for varsity. BEA beam scores include Kalis with 7.9, Lunz with 7.075, Douglas with 6.9, Armstrong with 6.4, and Blagg with 6.2. Floor scores are as follows: Kalis with 8.45, Armstrong with 8.050, Alicia Machacek with 7.55, Survis with 7.4, and Lizzy Uecker with 7.35.

As for the All-Around, Kalis placed first for the meet with a 32.7 average. Teammate Armstrong placed fourth for the meet with a 30.325.

The junior varsity team also worked hard at improving as a team.Though still not a full team, they are getting closer according to Coach Cole.

Buccaneer Amarrah Harris tied for second place in the JV beam, earning a 7.2 along with JCC’s Dasia Tomlin. Other JV beam scores include Survis earning a 6.7, Uecker with a 6.3, Maddie Dulac with a 5.5 and Aaliyah Bauer with a 4.4.

In bars, Uecker placed fourth with a 6.6 for BEA, while teammate Maddie Dulac, though unable to place, earned a 4.7 on the bars.

The JV Buccaneers were unable to place in vault and floor. JV vault scores include Machacek with 8.1, Dulac with 7.9, Lunz with 7.85, and Uecker with 7.6. Additional JV floor scores include Dulac with a 7.3, and Lunz with a 6.7.

In the All-Around, BEA’s Dulac placed third for the JV team with a 25.4 score.
