Practices for spring sports had just gotten underway when the COVID-19 pandemic brought activity to a screeching halt.

The Minnesota State Girls Basketball Tournament was cancelled after play had already begun. Boys basketball teams were still in section play when everything came to a halt.

On March 17, the Minnesota State High School League put out a statement regarding spring activity participation limitations.

Effective between March 18 and March 27, coaches and directors may not have in-person contact with any participants or require or suggest groups of participants to gather. They also may not suggest or support "captain's practices" or "open gyms."

The coaches and directors may not provide evaluations or feedback on participants' performance by use of video recording. They also cannot require or place undue influence on participants to take part in any individual workout or skills training.

Coaches and directors may connect with participants via technology (i.e. email, Learning Management System or school- approved communication tools).

They may also provide individual workouts or optional individual skills training via electronic communication.

The coaches and directors may also connect with and support participants who are challenged by the changes in their routines and life due to changes caused by COVID-19 limitations and restrictions.

Finally, coaches and directors must include the activities administrator on all communication to participants.

The MSHSL also reminds everyone spring sports are officially in season. Therefore, all league rules, policies and bylaws surrounding participation are in effect.
